Bailey to chair county board of supervisors
Doug Bailey, of Webster City, will serve as the chairman of Hamilton County Board of Supervisors for the next year following the election held Wednesday during the board’s reorganizational meeting.
Former Chairman David Young, Stanhope, thanked the rest of the board and other elected officials for their help and dedication throughout 2012.
“We don’t always agree, but we make a good team,” Young said of fellow supervisors Bailey and Wes Sweedler.
Sweedler was named chairman pro-tem.
Bailey highlighted some of the accomplishments of the past year. He pointed out the purchase and remodeling of the former UAW building for the new Hamilton County Public Health headquarters.
“Finding new accommodations for public health has been something that had been on our minds for quite a while,” Bailey said. He credited Young with keeping the idea on track.
He said that by refinancing general obligation bonds for the new Van Diest Medical Center, the hospital will save about $1 million in interest. At the same time, the refinancing allowed the county to provide funding for the public health remodeling project and to help build five new sleeper cabins in parks around the county.
The oath of office was given to Bailey and Sweedler, along with Auditor Kim Schaa and Sheriff Denny Hagenson, all of whom were re-elected in the November general election. Shari Vermett was appointed as the new county treasurer and was given the oath of office. Vermett will fill the vacancy left with the retirement of longtime treasurer Deb Leksell.
The supervisors also approve the appointment of the following individuals in county offices:

Sheriff: Scott McConnell, chief deputy; deputies Rodney Hicok, Kendall Peck, John Sadler, Douglas Timmons, Paul Whitmore, William Derrig, David Turpen and Gary Johnson; office staff Luanne Paper, office manager and civil process server; Julie Runyon and Tracy Runneberg, clerks; Jail: Alicia M.Salic Leek, jail administrator; Jailers: Williams Becker, Jodie Casey, Sheila Cordero, Jason Dingman, Allison Kolthoff, Kassondra Pittman, Kyle Utley, Jessica Reding, Ethan Krieger and Riley Bedford; Dispatchers: Christine L. A resolution establishing the Hamilton County Secondary highway and bridge construction projects slated to begin in 2013 was approved. Seven projects were identified by County Engineer Dan Waid. Those projects are:
Ziegler Avenue between 380th Street and 370th Street a bridge project
360th Street between Saratoga Avenue and Tollman Avenue a federal aid bridge project
Vail Avenue between 330th Street/Iowa Highway 175 and 300th Street a rock stabilization project
North Stonega Avenue (County R-38) between 180th and 165th streets
McMurray Avenue between 190th and 185th streets
McMurary Avenue between 175th and 165th streets
Stagecoach Road (County R-21) between Boone County and U.S. Highway 20.
The board approved the list of county depositories, including First American Bank, First State Bank, Webster City Federal Savings Bank, Iowa Falls State Bank (Williams branch), and US Bank (Stratford branch). Wells Fargo in Des Moines and an IPAIT account were also identified as doing business with the county.
Appointments and reappointments to county boards and commissions were also made. New appointments included Mike Brandrup, a delegate to the Prairie Rivers RC &D; Nick Hassebrock, Veteran’s Affairs Commission; Mark Dohms, magistrate appointing commision; and Doug Bailey, Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator for Hamilton County.
The board set the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 9 a.m. as the regular sessions for the supervisors, and established courthouse hours as 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Thirteen holidays were approved for county employees, including one day at New Years, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving, the last work day before Christmas (closing at noon), Christmas, New Years Day and one floating holiday.
The board will hold its next regular session on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
