Vermett sworn in as treasurer
Shari Vermett, Webster City, became the new Hamilton County treasurer Wednesday morning following an appointment by the Hamilton County Supervisors.
Vermett was given the oath of office at the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors at the board’s reorganizational meeting. The appointment comes following the announcement on Nov. 13 that longtime Hamilton County Treasurer Deb Leksell would retire on Dec. 31. With two years remaining of the term, the supervisors opted to fill the vacancy by an appointment rather than conduct a special election. However, the appointment Wednesday starts a two-week period during which time Hamilton County residents could gather signatures on a petition to call for a special election.
Two candidates applied and both were interviewed by the supervisors on Dec. 10. Vermett has 27 years of experience working in the treasurer’s office. Leksell voiced her recommendation of Vermett when she announced her retirement. The supervisors noted that the appointment would provide the least disruption with the office and in service to the public.
The supervisors also received the year-end report from the Treasurer’s Office prepared at the end of the business day on Dec. 31. The document closed out the books for the year, according to Bailey, and also on Leksell’s oversight. He noted that the books had balanced.
