Reiter, Rader claim medals for Hawks at Perry Invite

PERRY – South Hamilton took a big step up in competition on the wrestling mat here on Saturday, and yet it didn’t seem to bother several Hawks one bit.

Sixth-ranked (Class 1A) 120-pounder JD Rader collected a silver medal and 106-pounder Charlie Reiter seized the bronze at the Perry Invitational, helping the Hawks tie for eighth-place (81 points) in the field of 12 teams.

West Des Moines Dowling (262) dominated and claimed the team crown. West Marshall (203) was second, followed by St. Ansgar/Riceville (137).

Five South Hamilton grapplers placed among the top six at their respective weights.

“This was a good tournament and it’s at the appropriate time of year when we’re trying to figure out what we’re made of,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “I was proud of how it ended up … we wrestled to the best of our ability, just some of our guys ran into opponents that out-matched them.”

Rader pushed the pace throughout his finals bout against Dowling’s Michael Zachary, but was never able to convert a shot into a takedown. Zachary notched the winning takedown with 20 seconds remaining to prevail, 3-1.

“JD pushed him all across the mat, but he just couldn’t get past his defense,” Brodie said. “The kid had a great shot at the end, so it was a learning experience.”

Reiter won three of four matches in the lightest weight class.

“It was a good tournament for Charlie,” Brodie said. “He beat some kids that were of his ability or maybe even a little bit better, so hopefully this will be a confidence booster for him.”

Also placing for the Hawks were Austin Roys (138, fourth), Max Reiter (152, sixth) and Josh Lutter (285, fourth).

South Hamilton will hold Senior Night on Thursday when it takes on Prairie City-Monroe in a Heart of Iowa Conference dual. The Hawks will then prepare for Saturday’s league tournament at Saydel High School in Des Moines.
