Musical program is Sunday
STORY CITY – The Randall Area Fine Arts Council presents an organ recital by organist, composer, and improviser Paul Hertz on Sunday at 3 p.m. The recital will be held at St. Petri Lutheran Church, 804 Grand Ave, Story City. Admission is free, and a free will offering will be taken.
Paul Hertz is the organist at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames, and has studied organ with Lynn Zeigler at Iowa State University and Steven Hoffman at the University of Wyoming. Paul grew up in Nevada, Iowa, and has a degree in music composition from the University of Wyoming.
The first half of the recital, “Music for the Church Year,” will feature a variety of works based on hymn tunes. It will begin with music for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, continue with music for Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost, and close with music for Trinity Sunday, All Saints Day, and Thanksgiving.
The second half of the recital, “Five Hundred Years of Organ Music”, will feature organ works by Bach, Buxtehude, Rheinberger, and more, presented in chronological order. The recital will close with Paul Hertz’s original composition “Fantasia for Organ”, as well as several original organ improvisations.
There will be a reception following the recital.
The Casavant Opus 3100 pipe organ at St. Petri is a 22 stop, 28 rank, two manual organ built by the prominent Canadian organ builder Casavant Frres Lte. in 1971.
