KYL prepares long range plan
The Kendall Young Library Board of Trustees to the first steps on Tuesday toward creating a long-range plan for the library.
The library board had discussed setting up a long-range plan for several meetings prior to the Tuesday meeting. Library director Angie Martin-Schwarze said the plan will compile goals and objectives for the library several years in advance.
“A lot of this is stuff (the board) has already been talking about. The idea of the plan is to get those goals together to see how we’re doing and how we progress,” Martin-Schwarze said.
The plan, as described by Martin-Schwarze, is a catchall for library objectives from doing regular building maintenance to addressing other issues proactively.
That plan is divided into five focuses, which include technology, programs and services, collections, building and grounds and investments and farms. Martin-Schwarze said she took recommendations and notes from a technology and a building group that met last year to discuss what the library’s goals should be in those areas to compile the list.
The board had it’s first chance to consider the plan during Tuesday’s meeting. As such, no action was taken on the plan. Board members will discuss the plan and additional things to add to it at the library board’s next meeting on April 9.
During the director’s report, Martin-Schwarze said the transition to automation and cataloging software from The Library Corporation, TLC, has gone well. The library shut down on Feb. 19 to change over to the new software and to train staff on the new system.
“Really, the transition has gone quite smoothly. There’s a lot to learn and adjust to, but so far we’re able to do everything just fine. We’re still being trained on everything that we can do with this software. There’s a lot we have access to that we didn’t before and we’re learning all the time,” Martin-Schwarze said.
The new Kendall Young Library online catalog went live following the change to the TLC system. The catalog has many new features, including a format that better works with mobile and tablet devices. Users can also see items they have checked out, when they are due, any fines they have incurred and more. Users can also renew an item if a hold has not been placed on it, which users can also do on items they wish to check out.
The board discussed the results of the community survey sent out to Webster City residents. There were 501 responses, which is about an 11 percent return rate. Questions on the survey asked if residents use the library, and if not, why. It also asked, among other questions, if residents would like to see the library open an hour earlier. Martin-Schwarze said she would work to get data from the survey available to the public.
