WCCSD board approves 13-14 calendar

The calendar for the next school year was approved at the Monday meeting of the Webster City Community School District Board of Directors.

The first day of school next year is scheduled for Aug. 20. Christmas break will begin on Dec. 23 and school will resume on Jan. 3, 2014. Spring break is slated to begin on March 17. Graduation for the next school year will be on May 18 with the last day of school scheduled for May 28.

The board also approved the initial budget for the 2014 fiscal year. A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for April 8 at 6 p.m. during the next regular board meeting.

Superintendent Mike Sherwood said this year’s budget was probably the most difficult he has dealt with in over 15 years. The state legislature has not yet set allowable growth for the next fiscal year. As such, Sherwood presented five budgets at the last board meeting which accounted for anywhere from zero to four percent allowable growth.

“We approached the budget in a worst-case scenario. That worst-case scenario is if the legislature takes no action and that would place allowable growth at zero percent, so we based our budget on zero percent allowable growth,” Sherwood said.

Allowable growth is still a lifeline for schools and that lifeline has been thin lately with the legislature setting allowable growth at the lowest it’s ever been in the last three years, according to Sherwood.

The board also heard from a recent Standard and Poor’s report on the school district’s bond rating. The school recently received an A+ bond rating with a stable outlook. Sherwood said that would give the school district the best interest rate possible when selling off bonds.

In other business, the board approved the resignation of Riley Powell, who worked as a custodian for the district for 33 years. Board president Pam Hayes thanked him for all his years of service.
