Ullestad, Risetter in top 5; Hawks 3rd at West Marshall Invite
STATE CENTER – Trevor Ullestad and Braxton Risetter have picked up right where they left off a season ago on the golf course.
They’re the leaders of the South Hamilton boys’ team, and the Hawks will go as far as the two juniors can take them.
Ullestad finished third and Risetter was fifth at yesterday’s West Marshall Invitational at Lincoln Valley Golf Course. They braved the miserable conditions – sleet rained down on the players as they trudged out onto the course – to post scores of 74 and 76, respectively, on the par-72 layout.
They propelled South Hamilton to a third-place finish in the field of 13 teams. The Hawks put together a team total of 317 to finish two shots in back of runner-up Grinnell (315). Heart of Iowa Conference power Prairie City-Monroe shot a 307 to sit atop the standings.
“On a day like (Monday), with the elements, I’m really happy with a 317,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Ullestad said. “And the good thing is I know there are still some strokes that we left out there.”
Jacob Haugland shot an 81 and Jordan Toillion had an 86 to complete the Hawks score. Jordan Bowers (87) and Lucas Fisher (92) also competed for the Hawks.
PCM’s Hunter Van Veen topped Grinnell’s Zach McGriff in a playoff for the individual crown. Both shot rounds of 72.
Mark Ullestad says he’s confident his team will continue to move forward once the weather improves and the Hawks can actually get in some practice time.
“We’re starting to understand who is capable of shooting what, and the kids understand their games and know what they need to work on,” he said.
