Lions nip Lynx, Cowboys third at NCC triangular
WEBSTER CITY – Logan Yates and company gave the defending Class 3A state runner-up everything it wanted and then some on the front 9 at Briggs Woods Golf Course yesterday afternoon.
Clear Lake was able to sneak by Webster City by the skin of its teeth in the North Central Conference boys’ triangular. The Lions posted a 164 to the Lynx 166; Clarion-Goldfield finished third with a 175.
“Our mental game is improving,” WCHS head coach Dave Brighton said. “(We had) a real shot at winning the meet.”
Clear Lake, which returns four players off last year’s elite squad, received a 39 from Dane Waldron – a top-20 finisher at the 2012 state meet. He shared the low score of the meet with Yates and Clarion-Goldfield’s Chris Staudt.
Staudt was the medalist and Yates claimed the runner-up spot on a card back. Yates’ round included six pars and three bogeys.
Twin brothers Avery and Alec Fuhs both shot 41 for the Lynx, and Doug Stoakes added a 45.
