Hoffman finds back of net, WCHS girls fall to IF-A

ALDEN – Bruised and beat up, the Webster City girls’ soccer team did everything it could to stay on the heels of Iowa Falls-Alden here on Friday.

But too much Aubree Gilbreth foiled the Lynx plans.

Gilbreth scored a pair of first-half goals to give the Cadets a lead it never relinquished in a 2-1 victory over the Lynx – an identical score to their triumph over WCHS on April 12 in Webster City.

“It was a real courageous effort from the girls,” WCHS head coach Greg Bock said. “We were so banged up and bruised, we were playing reserves constantly.”

Gilbreth scored in the 12th and 27th minutes to put IF-A in charge, 2-0.

Rachel Hoffmann cut the deficit in half with 2:54 left in the first half with her first goal of the season for the Lynx.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net over the final 40 minutes.

The Cadets (4-2) laced 25 shots on goal at WCHS goalkeeper Molly Gilbert, who was in net in place of regular starter Maia Jaycox. Gilbert came up 23 saves, including one on a penalty kick in the first half.

“Molly just played a fabulous game in goal for us,” Bock said.

WCHS (2-8) was limited to 10 shots on goal.

The Lynx will be on the road against Aplington-Parkersburg today. The match will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Aplington.
