Newman blanks Trojets in softball opener

Despite what the scoreboard said, first-year Northeast Hamilton softball coach Natalie Ostheimer walked off the diamond in Mason City encouraged last night.

The Trojets were unable to scratch out a run in a 4-0 non-conference loss to Mason City Newman, but they made plenty of contact and played error-free ball in their season opener.

“I’m really impressed with my girls,” Ostheimer said. “They’ve put a lot of work into the season already and I’m just excited to get going.”

Newman broke up the scoreless game with a run in the third inning. The Knights tacked on two more in the fifth and one in sixth, and they finished with nine hits off Trojet senior pitcher Molly Greenfield.

Greenfield struck out four and walked two.

NEH collected three hits; Andi Anderson, Jennifer Jeffers and Lillian Chamness all singled.

The Trojets will open up their Iowa Star Conference schedule on Wednesday at Janesville.
