VDMC welcomes new trustee board members

Three new members of the Van Diest Medical Center Board of Trustees were administered the oath of office during their regular board meeting on Tuesday.

The appointments were made following a nominating committee’s recommendations and a special board meeting on May 14. The board unanimously approved the appointments of David Taylor, whose term will expire on Dec. 31, 2016, and Roberta Knutson and Justin Deppe, whose terms will expire on Dec. 31, 2014. Carroll Ose, board chairman, administered their oaths.

During the meeting, Van Diest Medical Center CEO Bob Mason held a moment of silence for those in Dayton, a town where two young girls were abducted and one has yet to be found. VDMC is currently in the process of opening a satellite clinic in Dayton. Mason said he spoke to Dayton mayor Richard Travis, and Mason said he pledged the full support of the hospital, including ambulances, medical supplies, help with the media, food and whatever else they needed.

“He asked for nothing,” Mason said. “Just to know we were there was enough.”

At least one employee of VDMC went to Dayton as a volunteer to help search for the still missing girl.

In other business, the board approved the budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year. Alice Heinrichs, CFO, reviewed the budget to board members. The budget included rate increases for rooms. The largest increases include a 5.41 percent increase for nursery cost, from $740 to $780, and a 5.17 increase in the skilled nursing facility cost, from $832 to $875.

A 2.75 percent increase overall for non-room and board rates was also approved. Board member Myra Maxon said the increases were not improper.

“Comparing it to other hospitals in the (Mercy Health) network, we are competitive. We are at or lower than other hospitals for those services,” Maxon said.

The board also approved the nomination of two members for the VDMC Foundation Board. The nominating committee recommended Joyce Gelhaus, recently retired director of laboratory at VDMC, and Matt Shannon, manager of the Webster City Fareway store.
