SH softball wins second in a row, avenges earlier loss to Saydel

JEWELL – The confidence and, quite frankly, the fun have begun to pick up in the South Hamilton dugout in recent games.

And it’s showing in the results.

A two-run fourth inning pushed the Hawks into the lead for good and they went on to beat Heart of Iowa Conference rival Saydel, 3-2, last night at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.

“We’re playing with more confidence, we’re playing more relaxed and we’re showing more mental toughness,” South Hamilton head coach Laura Read said after her team’s second one-run win in as many nights. “These games are really going to benefit us come tournament time.”

Ella Jans smoked a single to right-center in the fourth to bring Brittany Nicholson and Carly Swenson screaming to the plate with the go-ahead runs.

Saydel (11-14, 6-4 HOIC) – which beat the Hawks 4-2 last week – pulled to within a run in the sixth, but Nicholson slammed the door in the seventh. The senior hurler allowed eight hits and struck out four.

Down 1-0 early, South Hamilton (8-16, 4-10 HOIC) knotted the contest in the third on an RBI double to right-center by Kali Lucas. It brought around her twin sister, Kayla, from second.

Kali Lucas, Nicholson and Jans all ripped two hits. Kayla Lucas and Alyssa Hegland added singles.

The Hawks will be back at home for Senior Night against Greene County tonight.
