Businessmen donate meat to UDMO pantry

The local food pantry received a donation of several hundred pounds of ground pork this week which will help many area residents, thanks to three local businesses.

Dean Bowden delivered the load of meat Thursday morning. Bowden, who though retired is still affiliated with Webster City Custom Meats, said for several years the business has purchased the champion hog at the livestock auction following the Hamilton County Fair. Bowden said that he then had the pork processed and donated it to the Upper Des Moines Opportunity food pantry.

Two years ago, he said Rod Ruppel of Webster City RV called and also wanted to help by donating a hog.

“This year, Gary Chamness of Chamness Technologies at Blairsburg called and said he would also like to donate a couple of hogs,” Bowden said.

The result was nearly 600 pounds of ground pork that will go to help feed Hamilton County families that might be struggling to put food on their tables.

Bowden said he invited other businesses to join the efforts next year.
