Power Up YOUth to host MADD program Aug. 28
Power Up YOUth is bringing a national Mothers Against Drunk Driving program to Hamilton County Aug. 28.
“Power of Parents, It’s Your Influence,” which is sponsored by Nationwide Insurance, is intended to help parents and caregivers of teenagers talk with them about the dangers of underage drinking.
The workshop is from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. in the Sampson Room at Fuller Hall in Webster City.
Parents attending the 30-minute workshop will also receive a free handbook to help equip them with the tools necessary to keep their teens safe.
“Parents are the No. 1 influence in their child’s decisions about drinking,” said Kathy Getting, Power Up YOUth director. “MADD wants to help parents use that power to have positive conversations about alcohol and ultimately prevent teens from drinking too early. And so does our coalition. It’s a great partnership.”
“Power of Parents, It’s Your Influence” is based on a handbook model developed by Dr. Robert Turrisi, Pennsylvania State University. Through his research, Turrisi found that parents who used a similar handbook to talk to their college-aged kids about alcohol significantly reduced their kids’ drinking and behavior problems associated with drinking. MADD partnered with Turrisi to develop a similar handbook for parents of teenagers to help reach high-school-aged kids.
“Parents sometimes feel like their children are not taking to heart what parents are saying,” Getting said. “I know that I did at times. But recently my adult son told me that he had heard what I was saying all those years ago. And it made a difference. Talk to youth is powerful. Your words matter. This workshop will help you find the most effective ways of talking.”
