Get moving at Kendall Young Library


While many adults read quietly upstairs, a group of children at Kendall Young Library ran around and worked out downstairs as part of a movement class hosted by Leah Feltz.

Feltz is a fitness instructor at The Dance Connection and Fuller Hall. Her goal at Monday’s movement class was to get kids to have fun while exercising. She also incorporated reading into the workout, having participating children read a page of a book and then do a number of jumping jacks or push-ups for the page number that they read.

“I want to introduce them to actual exercise but in a fun way,” Feltz said.

Feltz will also host a “Fit for Life” class for all ages at Kendall Young Library on Oct. 1 beginning at 6:30 p.m. She plans to discuss different ways to work better nutrition and fitness into a schedule. Participants will also have a chance to sign up for a weekly newsletter that contains healthy recipes.

Feltz recently moved to Webster City. She became a certified fitness instructor in 2006 and has taught kickboxing, boot camp, step aerobics, cycling and more.

“Moving here, I wanted to continue teaching and there wasn’t anything set in place so I started doing my own thing,” Feltz said. “And people liked it and I needed another class so I wanted to get one going.”

Regular classes with Feltz are hosted on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. at The Dance Connection in Webster City. She also hosts classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays for an hour beginning at 9:15 a.m. at The Dance Connection with childcare provided. Classes with childcare are also hosted Monday, Wednesday and Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Fuller Hall.

“It can be hard to fit a work out into your schedule if you have kids, so I’m really excited about it,” Feltz said.

Childcare is provided at Fuller Hall outside of her class, and those wishing to get a workout in can use the service without signing up for her classes. However, Feltz said that she’s familiar working with people from children to age 65 and her class has something to offer for anyone interested.

“I think my fitness class is for everybody,” Feltz said.” I want somebody who can run a triathlon to come to my class and go home and be sore the next day. I want somebody who’s never done anything to be able to come to my class and survive, even if they will be sore the next day.”
