‘Beauty’ at South Hamilton
A classic story of love will appear on stage at South Hamilton High School.
The theater is preparing for a production of “Beauty and the Beast,” which will premier Nov. 14 at 7 p.m., with performances also scheduled for Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Director Jolene Schaefer, who has taught for eight years and been involved with the theater for two years, said 68 students involved with the play were very excited when the play choice was announced at the end of the last school year.
“We picked a good show,” Schaefer said. “It’s the full broadway length production, so there’s a lot to it.”
The elaborate set for the play was designed with local professional painter Sandy Teig. Schaefer said the set is fully three-dimensional, and has taken many hours of antique shopping to get right with real columns, railings and more.
Maryssa Check, a student playing chip, Mrs. Potts’ son, said she’s excited for the musical which features many songs not heard in the Disney movie. However, her favorite part of preparing for the play is working with her friends.
“It’s just so much fun to hang out with everybody,” Check said.
Jacob Heeren is playing Lumiere the candlestick, another one of the enchanted characters, said the biggest challenge for him and other students is preparing such an intricate play as a small school.
“It’s been tough to do, but I think we’re going to pull it together. It will be absolutely incredible,” Heeren said.
