Service to country honored

Cold temperatures and blowing snow forced the Webster City Veterans Day observance inside Jefferson Gym Monday morning, but it didn’t stop local veterans and students from gathering to remember those who served their country in the military.

The observance was conducted by American Legion Post No. 191. Legion Commander Ron Keigan welcomed those in attendance. Legion Chaplain Bruce Johnston offered the invocation and closing prayer.

Pat Powers, news director at KQWC Radio, was the guest speaker. He gave a brief history of Veterans Day and encouraged the students and veterans present not to forget those who are living in the Iowa Veterans Home or who are convalescing in veterans hospitals. He also offered a poem in honor of the observance.

Legion members also presented a 21-gun salute, stepping just outside the school doors in the snow to sound the salute. The playing of “Taps” was followed by a minute of silence in the gym as the city sirens sounded in tribute to the veterans.

The legionnaires also spent part of the day visiting Webster City eighth-grade classes. The vets shared experiences and stories from their military service with the students.
