The nature of welding

Participants are putting the finishing touches on artwork they have been working on this week as part of a class hosted through Hamilton County Conservation.

The class, Introduction to Simple Metal Working for Garden Sculpture, is taught by Doug Abbott who grew up south of Webster City. He said he has always had a strong connection to the land here and enjoyed the chance to come back and not only teach students how to work with welders and plasma cutters, but also to reconnect with the wilderness.

“In this class, we’re looking at ways in which we can draw inspiration from nature,” Abbott said.

Abbott was taught how to weld in graduate school by his father, Duane, who taught industrial arts in Webster City. He said teaching others to weld is rewarding but difficult as it is a dangerous and intimidating medium for some to work with.
