Designing downtown’s future
New ideas for longstanding local businesses were presented Wednesday night by Iowa State University Design students as part of the Downtown Design Project.
Webster City Chamber of Commerce Director Deb Brown said the 23 students presented logos, signatures, design objectives and more for each of the 20 participating businesses. Those students and owners talked about what they thought worked and what didn’t among their logos and signage. Brown said that most of the owners were in attendance.
“I think, overall, they were pleased,” Brown said. “For me, it was interesting to see this youthful take on things.”
Following the design reveals, Brown said the students will be sending discs containing all the presentation information to the Chamber, who is assisting with ISU’s annual Downtown Design Project. In January, the students will present a full written report with the presentations in book format. Each store owner will receive a copy of their own.
Brown said she is planning a gallery showing of the designs, which she said may be presented next year in a local vacant building.
The implementation of those designs will wait until spring, according to Brown, due to the weather.
