Saydel uses late surge to knock off Hawks in HOIC dual
DES MOINES – Trailing by just three points heading into the final four weight classes, the South Hamilton wrestling team was unable to close the gap any further in its opening Heart of Iowa Conference dual of the season here last night.
Saydel closed the clash with a pair of major decisions, a fall and a forfeit win to turn the relatively close bout into a 50-27 victory. South Hamilton gave up 18 free points on three forfeits.
Hawks’ head coach Dan Brodie was forced to juggle his lineup after two of his wrestlers failed to make weight, and so all things considered he was content with the first outing.
“Right out of the gate for the first meet I thought we wrestled pretty well for our experience level,” he said. “As a team there are a lot of things we need to work on and that definitely showed. But you need that first match to see what works and what doesn’t work.”
Saydel captured victories in six of the 10 contested matches.
South Hamilton picked up pins from seniors Austin Roys (145 pounds), Jordan Toillion (152) and heavyweight Josh Lutter. Junior JD Rader (132) earned a win by decision.
“The seniors are starting to wrestle like the kids that I think they can be,” Brodie said. “And I was really pleased with some of our underclassmen who stepped into the meet when they weren’t even expecting to wrestle.”
Lutter opened the dual by sticking Jace Langholz in 1:06 to give South Hamilton its only lead of the night. Saydel reeled off 24 consecutive points to take command before Rader was able to stop the bleeding.
Rader, a two-time state medal winner, controlled 10th-ranked (Class 2A) Austin Moen for six minutes en route to a 7-0 romp. Rader is ranked sixth (1A) at 126, but Brodie says he will spend the season in the lineup at 132.
“JD wrestled a really smart match,” Brodie said. “Moen was a quality opponent, but I don’t think he got comfortable the entire match.”
Roys stuck Corey Denning in 1:31 and Toillion followed with a quicker fall over Zane Zerkle in 1:02.
South Hamilton will head to Manson on Saturday to take part in the Doug Wood Cougar Invitational. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m.
