CMB girls win 3rd straight at expense of Hawks
JEWELL – A 16-9 second-quarter run put Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in front to stay and the Raider won their third straight contest on Coach Jim Marsh Court Friday night.
Trailing 12-8 after one quarter, the Raiders (3-8, 1-6 HOIC) – losers of eight consecutive tilts to start the season before the recent surge – took the lead before the half by relying on Abbie Haupert and Lexi Breon for the bulk of the points en route to a 44-37 victory over South Hamilton.
Haupert led all scorers with 24 points and Breon netted 15 to help send South Hamilton (1-8, 1-7 HOIC) to its fourth straight setback.
“It was a disappointing loss,” South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. “I thought we played a little sluggish and we didn’t bring the intensity we needed to win the game.”
CMB led 33-30 after three quarters and then extended the margin over the final eight minutes.
Savana Stangeland scored 12 points and corralled five rebounds for the Hawks. Carly Swenson rained in two of the team’s five 3-pointers and finished with eight points. Kayla Lucas chipped in five points, four assists and three steals.
Kaitlin Fisher had just one bucket in the loss, but she yanked down a game-high 10 rebounds.
South Hamilton will travel to Story City on Tuesday to face Roland-Story – arguably its biggest Heart of Iowa Conference rival.
