No. 9 Nevada girls clip Hawks

NEVADA – The South Hamilton girls’ basketball team slipped to 1-10 overall, 1-9 in the Heart of Iowa Conference with a league road loss here last night.

No. 9-ranked (Class 3A) Nevada topped the Hawks in a low-scoring affair, 38-23.

“I was very happy with the play on the defensive end of the court,” South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said after her club held the high-octane Cubs (9-2, 9-1 HOIC) scoreless in the fourth quarter. “Offensively, however, we were carless with the ball. Nevada’s press caused too many turnovers and unforced errors.”

Nevada outscored South Hamilton 29-15 in the second and third quarters to build a 38-19 cushion.

Kayla Lucas had a solid night for the Hawks with eight points, five steals and two assists. Kaitlin Fisher contributed six points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Carly Swenson knocked down the team’s only 3-pointer en route to five points; she also collected seven caroms.

Jessica Helton (13) and Kati Cassabaum (nine) led Nevada in scoring.

South Hamilton will return home to take on Saydel Friday night at 6 p.m.
