Rader stays perfect on season, gets oh-so close to 100 wins at Perry Invite

PERRY – Seventh-ranked (Class 1A) 132-pounder JD Rader, a South Hamilton junior, inched to within one victory of joining the school’s 100-win club here on Saturday.

Rader (25-0) stayed unbeaten on the season with three victories en route to the top of the podium at the Perry Invite. He earned his second win of the season over Heart of Iowa Conference rival Austin Moen of Saydel, 6-4, in the gold-medal round for his 99th career win.

Rader, a two-time state place winner, decked Perry’s Richie Cazares in 3:03 and won by technical fall (19-3, 2:56) over West Marshall’s Chad Berrey in the earlier rounds.

South Hamilton placed 10th in the 13-team field with 78 points. West Des Moines Dowling took home the team crown with 212, followed by West Marshall (195).

Josh Lutter (285) placed third for the Hawks. Luke Peters (138) and Austin Roys (145) were both fifth, and Max Reiter (160) finished sixth.

Lutter overcame a quarterfinal round loss by winning four consecutive matches on the backside of the bracket. Three of his wins came by fall.

Rader will get the chance to reach triple digits on Thursday when South Hamilton hits the road for a conference dual against PCM.

The Hawks will host the HOIC tournament in Jewell on Saturday.
