SH girls play for Kids Cancer Squad, fall to Gilbert

JEWELL – South Hamilton’s dedicated effort to raise money for the Kids Cancer Squad took center stage Friday night on Coach Jim Marsh Court.

The Hawks wore pink uniforms, held a silent auction and raffled items all to help the fantastic cause.

Oh yeah, a little basketball was played, too.

Unfortunately the Hawks’ good deed didn’t translate into success on the court, as Gilbert went on an 18-4 third-quarter run to put the Heart of Iowa Conference clash to bed and the Tigers went on to win 62-34.

South Hamilton (1-17, 1-15 HOIC) was unable to contain the balanced Gilbert offense, which received production from eight different players. Jane Brown (15 points), Elise Powers (11) and Paige Hoiberg (10) all scored in double figures, while Katie Reed (nine) finished a point shy.

Gilbert (13-7, 10-6 HOIC) led 32-19 at the intermission.

Savana Stangeland continued to pace the Hawks; she finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Allyson Ervin chipped in 10 points and eight boards, and Kaitlin Fisher added five points.

Hawks scare South Hardin

ELDORA – Down by 13 points in the third quarter, South Hamilton rallied to within a bucket down the stretch, but South Hardin made crucial free throws to escape with a 51-46 non-conference victory here on Saturday.

South Hardin (13-4) outscored the Hawks (1-18) 21-9 behind the 3-point arc and 20-9 at the charity stripe.

Savana Stangeland turned in a monster performance in the loss with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Kayla Lucas chipped in eight points, four boards and two assists.

Kayla Prosser led South Hardin with 15 points.
