Students shine at piano auditions
Iowa Music Teachers Association held district piano auditions Jan. 25, at Saint Olaf Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. Adjudicators for the event were Dr. Ted Reuter, Wartburg College, and Laurie Braaten-Reuter, Waverly.
The students are grouped into levels according to age. For each 15 entrants in Levels A, B C, one may be advanced to the state event held at Music Hall, Iowa State University, on Saturday, March 15. In Levels D, E, F, one in 10 entrants may be advanced.
Performance requirements include three memorized compositions of contrasting style, as well as scales, harmonic cadences, and arpeggios. The students also complete written theory and ear-training exams.
Carly Appel was named Alternate at Level A. Also performing in Level A was Addie Tesdahl.
Clay Willadsen was named Alternate in Level B. Other local students performing in this level were Alison Oswald, Malaise Runyan, and Reece Sadler.
Winner at Level C was Emily Willadsen. Tyler Geopfert and Luanne Xiao earned Honorable Mentions in Level C. Austin Lampman and Breanna Strait also performed in Level C.
Danielle Strait was a Level D performer.
Students receiving 90 percent and higher on the theory and ear-training tests are named to the Theory Honor Roll.
Carly Appel scored a perfect 100 percent on the Level A test.
Alison Oswald, Malaise Runyan and Clay Willadsen were named to the Level B Theory Honor Roll.
Level C Theory Honor Roll included Emily Willadsen, Breanna Strait, and Tyler Geopfert.
Danielle Strait earned a place on the Level D Theory Honor Roll.
The Fort Dodge district piano audition entrants were from 9 area music studios, including Fort Dodge, Humboldt, Lytton, Gowrie, Jefferson, and Webster City.
