The value of character

Webster City Middle School will spend Thursday celebrating and promoting the six pillars of character – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The daylong event is the annual Character Counts Day and this year’s theme is “Team Up for Character Counts.”

Thursday starts off with a series of about 20 speakers in the morning. The speakers will share on a variety of topics as they visit classrooms for 30-minute presentations. Organizers said the speakers would relate the importance of the six pillars of character and the importance of reaching out to help others through a variety of experiences.

Champions Forever, recently featured on America’s Got Talent, will bring its basketball show to Webster City. Bruce and Diane Crevier, along with their 12 children, have traveled all over the world to entertain and share a message of hope, according to organizers. Bruce Crevier is a four-time Guinness World Record holder for basketball spinning and has spun as many as 21 basketballs at the same time. He also holds the endurance world record, having spun one basketball without a break for 22 hours and 12 minutes.

Miss Teen Iowa, Amanda Armstrong, will also speak to the students on Character Counts Day. She will share tips on good character, setting goals and being the best person possible.

The afternoon will bring a Taste of Character, which is an opportunity for students to try a small sample of several foods representing the pillars of character. Organizers said a variety of service clubs and organizations will be on hand to distribute the goodies. During the tasting, students will be entertained by the high school jazz band and high school vocalists.

The students will also have an opportunity to experience an adaptive basketball game with a wheelchair basketball team from the Des Moines area. Students will also travel to the local elementary schools to work with younger students.

Interested parents, representatives of business and community members are invited to join the students and staff for the day. For more information, call the middle school at 832-9220.
