Hydroponics in action
For student in the fifth grade Literacy class, the theme this week for reading and writing is “Fantastic Foods.” To help with the theme, a special guest was invited to share with the class.
The teachers invited Dan Loughry, a middle school paraeducator, to come in and tell about his hydroponics system. Hydroponics is a nontraditional way of growing fresh fruits and vegetables indoors using fertilized water.
Loughry incorporated content vocabulary and science concepts that the students are currently studying. Teachers said Loughry’s expertise hooked studentsm and got them thinking about something brand new. Following the presentation, students sampled some fresh fruits and vegetables.
