Risetter first, Hawks second at B-F Invite
ALTOONA – A sub-160 team score would be a reason to celebrate for plenty of boys’ golf teams in the state, but South Hamilton isn’t one of them.
The Hawks simply have loftier expectations, which is why Friday’s 158 and second-place finish at the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational was considered slightly below average.
“I told the kids I’d give it about a C- and that’s where we’re at right now,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Ullestad said. “We need four solid scores and we’re just not getting that right now. But I still think we’re ahead of where we were at this time last year.”
Pella claimed the team title after firing a 148 on the par-35 front 9 at Terrace Hills Golf Course. Prairie City-Monroe (160) was two shots behind the Hawks in third.
South Hamilton senior Braxton Risetter did his part by posting an even-par 35 and he won the individual title after he topped Pella’s Jake Dorman in a two-hole playoff.
“Braxton hit it pretty well,” Ullestad said, noting Risetter’s scorecard included one birdie, one bogey and seven pars. “He continues to play real steady.”
Classmate Trevor Ullestad had a few missteps on the green, which included three 3-putts, but he still shot a 37.
“The greens (at Terrace Hills) are bigger than we’re used to and Trevor struggled a little bit,” his dad and coach said.
Jordan Toillion and Nathan Sogard added 43s.
South Hamilton played without No. 3 golfer Jordan Bowers, who was absent because of illness.
“Hopefully we’ll have Jordan back on Monday, but we’ll just have to see,” Mark Ullestad said.
The Hawks will travel to State Center on Monday to take part in an 18-hole tournament hosted by West Marshall at Lincoln Valley Golf Course. Players will tee off at 2 p.m.
