BOYS GOLF: WCHS boys get the best of Clear Lake again; Alec Fuhs leads with 37
CLEAR LAKE – Clear Lake has long been one of the elites in the Class 3A boys’ golf landscape.
So to beat the Lions on their home course? Yeah, kind of a big deal.
A day after topping Clear Lake at the Spencer Invitational, Webster City did it again yesterday afternoon – this time by the slimmest of margins – at the All Vets Club.
“We had a nice rebound meet,” WCHS head coach Dave Brighton said. “It was a good way to recover from (finishing second) at the Spencer Invite.”
The Lynx recorded three sub-40 rounds and fired a 155 to nip the Lions (156) by one shot. Clarion-Goldfield (172) brought up the rear at the North Central Conference triangular.
Returning state qualifier Alec Fuhs led WCHS with a 37, two shots in front of his twin brother Avery (39) and fellow teammate Logan Yates (39).
Freshman Connor Shannon made his varsity debut count – literally. He occupied the No. 4 slot on the Lynx scorecard with a 40. Drew Fielder (41) and Sean Vogelbacher (42) were just one and two shots back, respectively.
“Another bright sign of our depth was Connor Shannon,” Brighton said.
Clear Lake’s Dane Waldon posted a 36 to take the medalist spot by one shot over Alec Fuhs. Clarion-Goldfield was led by Trenton Sann with a 40.
John Ferrell shot a 37 for the WCHS junior varsity squad, which tallied a 172.
