Howard preps for Drake by winning 100, 200 at Ballard Classic
HUXLEY – Team point totals took a backseat to experimentation for the South Hamilton boys’ track team Tuesday night at the Ballard Classic Relays.
Did the changes always work? No, but that was just fine with head coach Darrell Paulsen.
“It’s not that we didn’t run well, it’s just that we tried some new things,” Paulsen said after the Hawks tallied 37 points to finish eighth in the Class B field. “It wasn’t about team position, it was about improving times.”
What didn’t change was the sprinting domination of senior Devin Howard, who prepped for Friday’s Drake Relays 100-meter dash by winning both the 100 and 200 in convincing fashion.
Howard breezed to the 100 gold in 10.84 seconds and later returned to the track to win the 200 in a new Class B meet record time of 22.52.
“Devin looked good,” Paulsen said. “He had a great start in the 100.”
Paulsen said Howard won’t compete today at the Hawk Relays in Jewell; he’ll run in the fourth of the 100 preliminary heats at Drake Stadium in Des Moines Friday morning at 8:46 a.m.
South Hamilton’s only other medal Tuesday night came from the 4×800 relay group of Titan Johnson, Jacob Ratzke, Caleb Olson and Devon Fisher. They completed the 2-mile journey in 8:32.65 to place second.
CMB won the Class B team title with 166 points, 27 points in front of runner-up Madrid (139).
