SOCCER: Gilbert, Lee lead Lynx to 3-1 win

ALDEN – Fresh off a tournament championship in Boone on Tuesday, the Webster City girls’ soccer team ran its winning streak to three straight matches here Friday evening.

The Lynx (3-2) scored a pair of first-half goal to take the lead for good and then added an insurance goal midway through the second half for a 3-1 victory over Iowa Falls Alden (1-4).

Both teams took just six shots on goal, but WCHS made the most of its opportunities.

“There is definitely some confidence in these team members,” WCHS head coach Paul Baedke said. “They’re self-motivated and they’re starting to trust each other.”

Talented forwards Molly Gilbert and Jesse Lee again worked well together. Gilbert rifled in an unassisted goal just 78 seconds into the match to put WCHS ahead for good, and she added a second goal off a Lee header assist with 18:20 left in the match.

Lee, the team’s goals leader, took a feed from Sarah Paukert and sent it into the back of the net with just 18 seconds remaining in the first half to give WCHS a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.

“(Gilbert and Lee) are teaming up very well and getting the hang of what each other is doing,” Baedke said. “Molly has worked up top by herself most years, so she’s starting to get comfortable with some help up there.”

Lynx goalkeeper Maia Jaycox came up with five saves.

WCHS will put its win streak on the line Tuesday evening when it travels north to face Clear Lake.
