Richard Muessigmann, 74, Stanhope

Richard Muessigmann, 74, of 990 Main Street in Stanhope, Iowa passed away at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa on Friday morning, April 25, 2014 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on February 17, 1940 in Hampton, Iowa the son of Paul and Esther (Siems) Muessigmann.

On March 20, 1965, he married Rose Jones at Joseph’s Chapel in Newport, Tennessee.

Richard was a graduate of Geneva High School in Geneva, Iowa. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the Army from 1963 to 1966, as an engineer. He was a trucker and mechanic for Hove Trucking in Stanhope for a number of years and for 27 years, as an over the road trucker for Decker Trucking of Ft. Dodge until his retirement in 2011

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading mystery novels, was an avid Cubs fan, and above all, a devoted husband and father.

Richard was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Stanhope where he served as a Sunday school teacher and Deacon. He was also a member of the American Legion Post in Des Moines; had served on the City Council in Stanhope and had volunteered as a firefighter and rescue unit member in past years.

His parents; sister Pauline Lybarger; and brother-in-law Luverne Range preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Rose of Stanhope; 2 daughters Rhonda Muessigmann of Stanhope and Renee Muessigmann of California; 4 brothers Donald Muessigmann and wife Carolyn of Mason City, Iowa, William Muessigmann and wife Jeanette of Stanhope, Iowa, Gerald Muessigmann and wife Carmen of Clark, South Dakota, and Duaine Muessigmann and wife Mina of Santee, California; a sister Phyllis Range of Ames, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard’s wishes were to be cremated.

A Celebration of Life memorial service at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and interment with military honors in Lawn Hill Cemetery in Stanhope will be held at a later date.
