Fuhs, Fielder solid in tough conditions; No. 6 Lynx cruise by Algona
ALGONA – The sign of a good golf team is one that isn’t the least bit happy with a 23-stroke dual-meet victory.
That was the situation the sixth-ranked (Class 3A) Webster City boys’ golf team found itself in Friday afternoon. The Lynx struggled in gusty conditions at the Algona Country Club – a course only a few of the players were familiar with – but still managed to post a 162 to easily top Algona (185) in a North Central Conference dual.
“Conditions were not ideal,” WCHS head coach Dave Brighton said. “Although the scores were high we learned about playing in difficult conditions on a course we had not seen before.”
Alec Fuhs navigated the tricky layout the best; the sophomore took home the medalist honor with a 39. Teammate and freshman Drew Fielder put on the best charge at the lead, but had to settle for second with a 40.
John Ferrell made his return to the varsity roster after a two-meet absence and contributed with a 41. Sean Vogelbacher added a 42.
Tyler Frideres led Algona with a 44.
WCHS will return to the course on Thursday when it hosts league rival Humboldt at Briggs Woods Golf Course. It will be just the second home meet for the Lynx this season.
