Trojans 21st, 22nd in 1A relays

DES MOINES – Northeast Hamilton took two cracks at competing for medals in Class 1A on Friday at the Iowa Co-ed State Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium.

The Trojans didn’t get the fairy tail ending they were hoping for though.

The quartet of Nick Jeffers, Logan Seiser, Kyle Pruismann and Tyler Smith finished at the back of their heats in the 1,600-meter medley and 4×400 relays. The medley was a final, while the 4×400 was a preliminary heat.

Their time of 3:48.53 in the medley earned them 21st place overall. They wound up 22nd in the 4×400 in a clocking of 3:37.86.

Mount Ayr, which went on to win the 1A team championship, was the class of the medley in 3:36.15. Mount Ayr also ran the fastest 4×400 prelims time – 3:28.25 – and went on to take the gold in Saturday’s final in 3:26.03.

Mount Ayr finished the three-day meet 77 points, 19 more than runner-up Madrid (58).

North Linn was the 1A girls’ champion with 57 points. Griswold was second with 43, 40 of those points coming from junior Rebekah Topham who won the 400 hurdles, 800, 1,500 and 3,000.
