SOFTBALL: Hawks drop two at BCLUW tourney

CONRAD – The South Hamilton softball team opened its season with a pair of losses at Monday’s BCLUW Memorial Day Tournament.

High-powered Ballard – the 2012 Class 3A state champion – hammered out 11 hits and all-state pitcher Kenzie Ihle threw a no-hitter in an 11-0, 4-inning victory over the Hawks.

Denver rattled off 10 hits in a 9-1 win over South Hamilton.

The Hawks (0-2) went with a pair of freshman pitchers in both games. Leandra Diersen took the loss against Ballard and Ady Wintermote did the same versus Denver.

“I thought our freshman pitchers did well. They came out throwing strikes,” South Hamilton head coach Laura Read said. “We have a lot of girls who haven’t practiced much because of track … defensively we need to eliminate some mental mistakes and that will come with practice.”

Alyssa Hegland and Carly Swenson had base hits against Denver. Kali Lucas plated the team’s only run in the sixth inning.

South Hamilton (0-2) will be at home Wednesday night to take on Nevada at 7:30 p.m.
