Zahn and Halko stellar on hill, WCHS baseball rallies to beat Golden Bears
ALGONA – There’s no better way to rebound from a loss than by beating a good team.
That’s precisely what the Webster City baseball squad did here last night, as the Lynx received stellar pitching from Cal Zahn and Daniel Halko in a 4-2 road win over Algona Bishop Garrigan.
Garrigan (6-2, 2-1 NCC) beat Clarion-Goldfield convincingly last week just days before the Cowboys handed WCHS a 4-2 loss on Friday.
“Not only did we beat a good team, we beat a good program,” WCHS head coach Troy Smock said. “It was a find a way kind of game for us.”
Zahn and Halko combined to toss a three-hitter. Zahn went five innings to pick up the win and Halko threw two innings of no-hit ball to collect the save.
The two right handers combined for six strikeouts, but more importantly they walked just one batter.
“Keeping the walks down was outstanding,” Smock said. “I knew we had good pitching, but it’s nice to have it in a big game.”
Down 2-0 after five innings, WCHS (3-1, 1-1 NCC) rallied with four runs in the sixth. The Lynx ripped four of their seven hits in the frame, highlighted by RBI doubles off the bats of Dylan Fielder and Jordan Myers. Doug Stoakes roped an RBI single as well and Cory Keenan plated a run with a suicide squeeze bunt.
Fielder finished with two hits, as did Ben Mossman. Trey Tesdahl also singled.
WCHS will be at home tonight for a non-conference game against Forest City at 7:30 p.m.
