Greene County scores early, often in rout of Hawks

JEWELL – Greene County just kept scoring and scoring … and scoring more Friday night in a Heart of Iowa Conference baseball win over South Hamilton at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.

The Rams (3-3 3-3 HOIC) scored at least four runs in each of their at bats and erupted for nine in the second in a 17-0, 3-inning rout of the Hawks.

“It’s frustrating, but there’s a lot of learning still left to do,” South Hamilton head coach Bret Bell said. “We’re going to have to start turning batting practice into a real practice and just tweak a few things as a coaching staff.”

Caleb Olson had the lone hit – a single – for South Hamilton (1-7, 0-5 HOIC).

NO. 3 NORSE TOP HAWKS: Third-ranked (Class 2A) Roland-Story took care of South Hamilton, 13-3 in 5 innings, in the first round of its tournament on Saturday in Story City.

The Norsemen plated six runs in the first inning to overcome an early 2-0 deficit, and they added five runs in the third.

Ben Clark, Andrew Schlatter and Alex Urbanek all hit home runs in the win.

The remainder of the tournament was cancelled because of rain.
