Register for the regatta
The annual Cardboard Regatta will be held Saturday in conjunction with the Boone Bash River Dash celebration. There’s still time to get a boat registered for the event, but the deadline is quickly approaching. All entries must be turned in by Wednesday at the Chamber of Commerce office.
The event will be held Saturday with registration to begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Webster City Outdoor Pool. Boat inspections and a race safety meeting will be held before the races begin at 9 a.m.
In previous years, the race was held at Briggs Woods Lake. Chamber officials said the move to the pool will give spectators a great vantage point to cheer on their favorite sailors.
Entries in the regatta are $5 per team member or $15 for the team total for youths ages 5 to 13 and $10 per team member or $30 total for adults.
Materials that can be used in the Cardboard Regatta include cardboard, latex caulk, paper drywall tape and latex-based contact cement. Duct tape can be used, but it’s not as good as the contact cement, according to master cardboard boat builder Steve Struchen. Struchen held a boat building class in May to help regatta entrants. Polyurethane or porch and deck enamel can be used to seal the cardboard to make it water-proof. The boat can also be decorated with paints, stencils or other items.
Materials that are forbidden in the regatta include metal, two-part glues (resins and epoxies), plastic, foam core boards or styrofoam, pasteboard or chipboard, wood or non-corrugated cardboard, such as cardboard tubes.
A complete list of other supplies needed and some of Struchen’s design considerations is available at the Chamber office. Registration information and a list of rules are also available through the Chamber.
