Frank Loesser wrote the music and lyrics while Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows teamed up to write the book to bring the short story by Damon Runyon to life on the Broadway stage in 1950. Director Wil Groves, music director Anne Scherve-Ose, and assistant director Cathy Olson have been guiding the re-creation of the musical for WCCT’ audience.
The tale centers on the unlikely romance between Sarah Brown (Amanda Keul), an urban missionary with the Save-a-Soul Mission, and Sky Masterson (Jordan LeClere), a smooth-talking gambler. The long-term engagement of another gambler, Nathan Detroit (Andrew Wotherspoon) and Hot Box Dancer, Adalaide (Katie Short) adds interest to the story. Assorted gamblers looking for a crap game, other members of the Mission, the nightclub dancers, and assorted denizens of the streets of New York round out the cast of characters.
