Lions Club offers thanks for donations, helpers at Watermelon Day
To the Editor:
The Stanhope community celebrated its’ 57th Watermelon Day on Saturday, July 19th. It was a day to enjoy a great parade, live music, games, rides, slides, ballgames and “Lion” burgers. Not to mention that wonderful cold watermelon. Although sponsored by the Stanhope Lions, Watermelon Day happens because of the support of the Stanhope Firemen, the Watermelon Day Committee and the many local residents who give hours of their time, talents and hard labor.
From the presentation of the American Flag in the parade to the last out in the softball tournament, there was something all day for everyone. The variety of parade floats, kids, businesses, horses, antique vehicles and community rescue squads made the crowd wonder what would be coming next in the parade. A special thanks to the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Calliope for adding music to the parade. They were only the start of a day full of entertainment for the young and old. People danced, tapped their feet, sang along with a favorite song and even learned to play a drum. There was even a little spontaneous clogging on the side.
We wish to thank the following merchants for their generous donations: Arnold Motor Supply, Black Hills Energy, Casady Bros. Implement, Central Iowa Building Supply, City of Stanhope, Cooperative Telephone Exchange serving Kamrar and Stanhope, Ehlert Seed, Fieldstone Inn, First State Bank, Foster Funeral Home, Gerber Auto Care, Ingraham Construction, McMurray Hatchery, Mid Iowa Truck Services, NAPA Auto Parts, North Central Turf, Poet Biorefining, Sparky’s One Stop, Swine Graphics, Timm’s Auto Body, Tolle Automotive Inc., Tony’s Tire, Town & Country Insurance, United Co-op, Webster City Auto Center, and Webster City RV. Thanks also to the Stanhope Monday Morning Coffee Ladies, the 10:00 Coffee Ladies and a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.
How can the Lions thank all the planners, workers, ball players, parade entries and families who brought youngsters to play a game, pedal in the tractor pull or enjoy a ride or two? It was a delight to see all the smiling faces as a prize was won, or a nickel was found in the sawdust or their face was painted by Tickle the Clown.
It really says something about a community when people return year after year (even from out of state) for a one day celebration called Watermelon Day. It is a community event that we all can take pride in.
Thank you barely covers the appreciation to all who made Watermelon Day what it is today.
